Minhwa refers to traditional Korean folk paintings created by ordinary people during the Joseon Dynasty. These paintings are known for their vibrant colors, symbolic motifs, and charming, unrefined beauty. In this class, you will experience the unique aesthetics of Korean culture by painting various traditional subjects such as tigers, magpies, lotus flowers, and chaekgado. Creative Minhwa is a modern interpretation of traditional Korean folk painting, based on the styles and techniques of jeontong minhwa (traditional minhwa). It reimagines classic subjects—such as tigers, lotus flowers, and chaekgado (bookshelf paintings)—with a contemporary sensibility and personal creativity. While preserving the beauty and symbolism of traditional minhwa, creative minhwa allows artists to express their own stories, emotions, and individuality freely within the traditional framework.
